Over the years I have had the opportunity to teach courses in the School of Computer Science, the Department of Mathematics & Statistics, the Department of Integrative Biology, and the Department of Population Medicine. Most recently my teaching assignments have included CIS3750, CIS4020, CIS6650, and the ICON Transdisciplinary Classroom.
In almost all of my courses, I have students work on a broad social challenge that has been identified by a community partner. In this way, students are required to develop both discipline-specific skills, as well as transferable skills including teamwork, effective communication, bias identification, knowledge translation and transfer, knowledge mobilization, and leadership.
The development of transferable skills is the key focus of the ICON Transdisciplinary Classroom. In particular, ICON has been designed to foster these skills by bringing together students from all year levels and disciplines to work together on a community-identified social challenge.
