The ICON: Transdisciplinary classroom is back!
Last year Dr. Shoshanah Jacobs (Department of Integrative Biology) and I offered the very first ICON classroom. The idea behind the classroom was to bring together senior undergraduate students from all disciplines across campus and challenge them with a community-based broad social issue. Specifically, the winter 2015 class worked with Reid’s Heritage Homes to develop solutions to change behaviours to allow home owners (and their families) to achieve a NetZero home.
This year the course returns with Yorklands Green Hub as our community partner. Working together, the students will be tasked with designing the Mobile Sustainability Classroom (MSC). Quite literally a classroom/lab on wheels, the MSC will bring lessons of sustainable living to elementary and high school students in the community.
The ICON students will also be tasked with developing the marketing, business case, and curriculum of the MSC, and any internal systems that manage the unit.
Classes will be held Wednesdays from 5:30pm-7:00pm beginning January 20th in ROZH105.
