First Day Of Class!

The Reynolds Building (last autumn).

Today marks the first day of special classes for the still has that new car smell semester. Welcome to the fall 2012 semester at the University of Guelph.

Campus is currently buzzing with thousands of new students, old friends are catching up, students and profs are hurrying from class to class hoping to make a good first impression.

I love this time of year. Despite the long lines and the chaos that comes with the rather jarring change that is the summer to fall semester turnover, I always find this time of the year particularly inspiring. Students are back, campus is alive, and there’s an electricity in the air – a potential that comes from new beginnings, fresh and rested minds, and an eagerness to learn.

A rainy day on campus (earlier this summer).

To all of the new students on campus – Welcome to Guelph. May it be an excellent home to you for the next four (or more) years. While you are here, be sure to check out our community – both on and off campus. Go to the Guelph Farmer’s Market, try a yoga class, hike some of our awesome trails, go to Guelph Lake, see something at the River Run Centre, eat at one of our many awesome restaurants, check out the splash park/skating rink in front of City Hall, volunteer, get to know your profs, get to know yourself, paint the cannon, write for the Ontarion or the Peak, get involved, get active – enjoy your new home. You won’t regret it. I promise that you will quickly learn why Guelph is an amazing place to study.

A sunny day in Guelph

To all of the returning students – Welcome back – campus was so quiet without you. As experienced students, it is your responsibility to share what you know about campus and the City of Guelph with the new students. Share your insights, your experiences, your love of all things Guelph.

Let’s make this an awesome year – both on campus and off.

Good luck to all, and welcome to Fall 2012.
